Dive Insight:
Freight fraud continues to escalate across the logistics sector, with new data highlighting a sharp increase in sophisticated schemes.
According to the American Transportation Research Institute’s October 2025 report “The Fight Against Cargo Theft,” strategic cargo theft — defined as theft by fraud — is becoming more prevalent.
Carriers report that roughly 20% of their theft incidents fall into this category, with annual losses averaging $520,000. Logistics service providers reported even more vulnerability: 62.5% of their thefts are tied to fraudulent activity, according to a survey of providers.
In response to the growing threat, NMFTA is inviting transportation organizations to join its Freight Fraud Prevention Hub Partner Program. The effort is designed to foster industry collaboration through education, standardized guidance, stronger identity and fraud prevention signals, and broader alignment on emerging and established standards, according to the hub website.
The launch of the Freight Fraud Prevention Hub follows the recent rollout of NMFTA’s Standard Carrier Alpha Code (SCAC) Verified initiative. As of Feb. 26, SCACs for non-Class 8 carriers — those without FMCSA identifiers — are now issued and renewed exclusively through the association's official platform.
