Dive Brief:
- Saia opened a 74-door terminal on Tuesday in York, Pennsylvania, part of an effort to grow its Northeast presence and bolster its national network of over 200 terminals, according to a news release.
- While the carrier previously serviced the area through its Harrisburg site, the addition marks the carrier’s first location in York, Senior Marketing & Corporate Affairs Specialist Jeannie Jump said in an email.
- “This new facility strengthens our Northeast coverage and positions us to support continued growth across the region,” Saia EVP of Operations Patrick Sugar said in the release.
Dive Insight:
Amid the freight market downturn, Saia has invested in its network in preparation of the next freight cycle. That’s amounted to $2.5 billion over the last five years in its business, according to its 2025 annual report.
The site gives one-day service to key parts of Virginia along with major population hubs like Baltimore, Boston and New York as well as Charlotte, North Carolina. That service window also extends throughout northern Ohio and part of Michigan and extends throughout most of New England, including parts of Maine.
“Expanding our network in key markets like York allows us to better serve our customers with the speed, reliability and flexibility they expect from Saia,” Sugar said in the release.
Its 2025 annual report also noted how the carrier is targeting new and existing markets to “be closer to our customers and position us to gain market share.”
Similarly, other carriers, from Estes Express Lines to AAA Cooper Transportation and A. Duie Pyle, have been expanding their networks. Meanwhile, FedEx Freight removed 1,000 doors during recent years while repositioning its network in strategic locations to serve the densest freight markets, COO Clinton McCoy said April 8 during an Investor Day presentation.
