Dive Brief:
- Interstate carrier Epic Lightning Fast Service will completely shutter its business operation at 5670 Kearny Mesa Road in San Diego and lay off 116 workers by the end of October, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification letter filed last month.
- According to a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration database, the carrier had 59 power units and 93 drivers as of late July. The carrier also had Amazon-branded vehicles to deliver packages for the parcel giant.
- “This closure is expected to be permanent and will affect all” employees, the letter said.
Dive Insight:
The prolonged freight downturn, trade policy pressure and consumer hesitancy continues to disturb the market, affecting truck manufacturers and carriers of all sizes.
That fragile environment has hit Amazon partners such as Epic Lightning Fast Service and Accelore Group, which is laying off 214 workers in Texas on Nov. 1.
Meanwhile, similar service providers such as NFI Interactive Logistics is laying off 79 workers between Oct. 18 and 25 at a Lebanon, Indiana, facility that’s closing, according to a layoff notice.
“It is NFI's intention to attempt to place some employees at other locations with the same or more favorable working conditions,” the notices said.
OEMs have been particularly hit with faltering demand. Cumulative orders for the September 2024 to August 2025 season were down 15%, FTR recently reported.
