Google is helping put an additional 25 electric trucks on the road, according to a Tuesday announcement, through a partnership involving electric truck startup Nevoya and the Center for Green Market Activation, a nonprofit organizing shippers to collectively fund more zero-emission infrastructure.
The Google partnership involves advancing capital to Nevoya to accelerate its fleet deployment along a key freight corridor in Texas — between Dallas and Houston — and create the dedicated charging infrastructure to support it. In exchange, Google will receive environmental certificates it can use to claim emissions reductions for the company's sustainability goals.
The Center for Green Market Activation detailed in January how it had brought together companies like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Green Worldwide Shipping and Meta to help deploy electric trucks from Nevoya on the Houston-Dallas lane. With Google's addition, the total project will now involve 63 trucks and is set to launch in early 2027.
“The overall project, with 63 trucks in total, is the largest known deployment of class 8 battery (the largest truck classification) zero-emission trucks in Texas,” Jenna Stauffer, Google's head of strategic priorities for climate operations, said in the Tuesday announcement.
The center established this buyers alliance in 2023, which is known as GMA Trucking. It allows companies to take part in a procurement and book-and-claim system, which breaks out the environmental attributes from the electric trucks. Companies such as shippers pay into the system, receive environmental certificates and earn credit for the reductions in emissions.
“Book and claim helps unlock the capital and operational certainty to deploy electric capacity where it makes the most commercial sense," Nevoya CEO Sami Khan previously said in the January announcement.
The partnership also involves supplying the appropriate charging infrastructure for the route. To achieve that, Nevoya is partnering with Greenlane.
“This is an operating model shift, not just a powertrain play,” Nevoya Chief Commercial Officer John Vendon said in a LinkedIn post.
Nevoya, a California-based electric trucking startup founded in 2023, is working with shippers and 3PLs to help transition supply chains to zero-emissions trucking.
“Nevoya was selected after an extensive evaluation through a competitive RFP to trucking carriers seeking to deploy Class 8 battery-electric trucks powered by renewable electricity (or qualifying hydrogen fuel-cell trucks) across the contiguous United States,” Clayton Gerber, senior program manager at the Center for Green Market Activation, said in a statement to Trucking Dive.
