Electric charging hub developer EV Realty has opened a site in Southern California featuring 76 stalls to power commercial vehicles.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday commemorated the addition, which already has customers on board that include J.B. Hunt Transport Services, distributor Gate City Beverage and fully electric carrier Nevoya.
“The site is strategically located near the San Bernardino Intermodal Facility,” where there’s over 60 million square feet of industrial warehouses nearby, a news release noted. “It also sits near Interstates 10 and 215, a major freight lane from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.”
The San Bernardino site’s 9 megawatts of capacity can serve over 200 medium- and heavy-duty trucks per day, the release noted.
EV Realty launches charging hub in San Bernardino
The shared infrastructure developed by a company such as EV Realty helps scale electric adoption, Nevoya Chief Commercial Officer John Verdon said in an interview Monday.
“They're a property developer first,” Verdon said of EV Realty, “and so having a partner that deeply understands that space is a de-risk for us as an operator.”
Beyond EV Realty’s site, there are already chargers that provide some access for commercial vehicles in California. And there are development plans for scores more along key corridors in the state and throughout the rest of the U.S., according to a CALSTART infrastructure map.
Medium- and heavy-duty electric charging stations
“Southern California has something of the order of 20-plus heavy duty trucking truck charging facilities,” Verdon said, noting those help the carrier service a variety of Fortune 500 customers. “A number of those are looking to expand, and our ability to expand is that contingent our ability to find charging in those markets.”
Nevoya’s approximately 45 trucks serve drayage and over-the-road routes, extending along California’s I-5 and I-10 to Phoenix as well as within Texas between Dallas to Houston on the I-45, Verdon said. The carrier plans to add about 50 Tesla semitrucks in Texas this year, he added.
“We are scaling very quickly,” Verdon said. Having a partner such as EV Realty can help electric trucking businesses overcome capital costs and operational challenges regarding grid connections. That can help a company like Nevoya accelerate growth, he noted.
