The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is slated to launch a voucher program to reduce the cost of zero-emission drayage and yard trucks.
The port is allocating up to $39 million of Environmental Protection Agency grant money for the point-of-sale discounts with OEMs and dealers.
A fact sheet lists the Class 8 drayage truck voucher amount as $230,000 and off-road terminal truck discount as $150,000.
The effort is slated to start this fall with OEMs picked on a rolling basis based on sign-ups.
Additionally, $5 million will aid new charging hubs through another new program called the Green Drayage Accelerator. The sites will be built within 10 miles of the port.
Program administrator CALSTART will develop dashboards for the new programs, which are slated to start this fall.
“This $45 million partnership with CALSTART puts zero-emission trucks, terminal tractors, and charging infrastructure within reach for the operators who serve this port every day,” Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole said in a Sept. 3 news release.
“The programs will further strengthen the Port Authority’s wide-ranging, ambitious sustainability agenda,” the port said in the release. According to the port, the programs build off recent efforts of opening an electric truck charging station at Port Newark last year with four super-fast chargers, among other initiatives.
The money comes through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, providing nearly $3 billion for Clean Ports Program funding for ports across the country.
