Averitt is planning to open new facilities in 2028, one near Louisville, Kentucky, and another in Charlotte, North Carolina, investing hundreds of millions of dollars to secure an expanded footprint.
The investment numbers, which total $313 million between the sites, are projections, a company spokesperson said in an email. As construction progresses, which will begin soon, those numbers are likely to change.
The Louisville development entails a potential $113 million investment, featuring a 100-door cross-dock, expandable to 160 doors, warehouse totaling over 286,000 square feet and parking space for over 300 trailers.
Its 182-person workforce there is also slated to add 64 employees over the next four years to the new location in Bullitt County along Interstate 65. The address will be 360 Averitt Way in Brooks, the company told Trucking Dive.
“New positions will include local and over-the-road drivers, dock associates, diesel mechanics, sales, administrative support and other logistics professionals,” public announcements on the developments said, noting the company’s culture of advancement opportunities.
The Charlotte site calls for a 150-door cross-dock, regional office and two warehouses totaling more than 500,000 square feet.
“This Charlotte expansion represents one of the most exciting and distinctive facility investments in Averitt’s 55-year history,” Barry Blakely, president and COO, said in the release. “It will be unlike any other Averitt location in the country.”
Both additions replace existing 40,000-square-foot service centers, located at 4020 McCollum Court in Louisville and 3708 Westinghouse Boulevard in Charlotte, the company said.
The Charlotte development could top over $200 million, and the carrier bought the parcel for $71.7 million in December, according to city records.
The new sites will allow faster deliveries and improved flexibility and efficiency, Blakely added. The Charlotte property spans 104 acres, allows for adding 50 doors to the dock and provides parking space for over 400 trailers.
The service expansion is located at 2124 Shopton Road near the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The existing workforce there, 182 full-timers, is slated to get 211 additional workers over the next four years.
