Roehl Transport announced Wednesday it’s increasing driver pay once again this year.
The new pay increase, effective Oct. 4, is between 2 and 3 cents per mile and also ups accessorial pay, including stops, detention and activity pay like drop and hook and tarping for flatbed drivers, VP of Driver Employment Tim Norlin told Trucking Dive in an email.
“The total increase is between 7 and 11% based on driver experience and fleet,” Norlin wrote.
Previously, the Marshfield, Wisconsin-based carrier raised pay by 3% to 6% in early June, Norlin noted. That involved a 2- to 4-cent increase and also improved driver trainer compensation at that time, he said.
As of September, Roehl drivers with one year on the job average $1,435 a week, or nearly $74,620 per year, and the top half of the company’s drivers average $1,625 per week, or $84,500 a year, the company says.
“We believe Roehl drivers should earn more,” CEO Rick Roehl said in the announcement.
Roehl, which has over 2,100 power units, also said the newest changes apply to company drivers in refrigerated, flatbed, van, curtainside and dedicated divisions.
The carrier described the pay change as an investment that will allow its drivers to be among the highest paid workers in the industry, earning “well over $100,000” depending on experience.
Additionally, owner-operators and lease operators will also receive a “significant compensation increase,” the company said without providing further details.
The company also provides bonuses and other incentives, including a profit-sharing plan that’s made a distribution every year since it was started over four decades ago.
Other carriers have also been increasing driver pay recently, including Anderson Trucking Service, Averitt and Nussbaum Transportation.
