Daimler Truck reappointed John O’Leary to president and CEO of its North American operations through the end of 2028, the company announced on May 6.

The truck maker said extending O’Leary’s leadership role ensured “continuity in one of its most important markets.” O’Leary began serving the role in 2021, which was originally set to end in December.
Joe Kaeser, supervisory board chair of Daimler Truck, said the two-year extension gives the company “an experienced and well-regarded CEO” for one of its most important markets.
“John plays a crucial role in steering DTNA through the challenging environment the industry has been facing,” Kaeser said in a statement.
Daimler Truck provided details on a strategy to return to profitability during its Q1 earnings call after the company reported its 2025 truck sales fell 26% from the prior year. The manufacturer noted the prolonged freight recession and ongoing tariff impacts continued to weigh on the company in 2026, contributing to its lowest Q1 sales for North America since 2010.
The company is leaning on O’Leary to lead its domestic turnaround. Daimler Truck credits him with strengthening the manufacturer’s position in the North American market through strong operational execution, disciplined market management and providing focus on advancing conventional and advanced technologies.
O’Leary said he looks forward to continuing as the company’s North American leader, adding, “We are fully committed to relentlessly advancing innovation across all our products and services to further strengthen our leadership in all markets in which we compete.”
