Dive Brief:
- Kodiak AI has expanded its autonomous trucking program into the Midwest, demonstrating its technology in Ohio and Indiana. It’s the company’s first operational deployment outside the southern U.S., according to an April 7 press release.
- The company partnered with DriveOhio, a smart mobility initiative of the Ohio Department of Transportation, to showcase its driverless trucks along Interstate 70, a major east-west freight corridor.
- “This program highlights not only the maturity of our technology, but also its ability to operate safely and effectively beyond the sunbelt, in new environments that are critical to the U.S. supply chain,” said Don Burnette, founder and CEO of Kodiak, in the release.
Dive Insight:
As Kodiak moves toward a planned 2026 launch of its long-haul driverless trucks, the company is beginning to scale beyond its early deployments on private roads in West Texas.
In the Permian Basin, Kodiak’s vehicles have already faced demanding conditions, including uneven terrain, narrow bidirectional lanes and heavy traffic, Burnette said during the company’s Q4 earnings call on March 10. Adding weather to the mix further increases that complexity.
“As we expand, we obviously see new things, see new challenges and increase the diversity with which the system has operated,” he said.
While I-70 also has its share of road surface roughness, including potholes, the Midwest introduces new variables — from seasonable weather shifts to road conditions — that many autonomous vehicle developers have yet to fully address.
In February, Kodiak started testing its long-haul trucks at highway speeds at the American Center for Mobility, a 500-acre automotive proving ground in Southeast Michigan. The recent Midwest demonstration, however, marks a step beyond closed-course testing.
The company’s expansion into Ohio was not a continuous commercial operation, like its deals with Atlas Energy Solutions and, more recently, Martin Brower. Rather, it was a controlled demonstration for transportation officials, policymakers and industry stakeholders in Ohio and Indiana — offering a preview of how Kodiak’s technology could perform in a real-world environment.
